A study of the effectiveness of shockwave therapy to cure cellulite in the gluteus and posterior of the thigh was reported in Dermatology Research and Practise. Ten shockwave therapy sessions were completed by 27 women. Participants were evaluated at the beginning, after six and ten sessions, and then three months after the final session. Researchers saw notable increases in quality of life, skin elasticity, and cellulite severity.
It is believed that because women have more fat cells than men, they are more susceptible. And while reducing body fat can help, even the most physically fit people can still develop cellulite.
Other contributing factors can include genetics, pregnancy, and age as the skin loses its elasticity.
Common treatments for cellulite include topical agents, ultrasound, and laser therapy, but these and more have shown only varying degrees of success.
The Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy tightens the connective tissue by utilising the body's own healing processes.
It promotes and activates the synthesis of new collagen, strengthening the connective tissue in the epidermal tissue layer.
The strengthened connective tissue improves resistance and stops the fat cells from protruding outward and generating cellulite.
Cellulite reduction with shockwave therapy is clinically proved to be successful. Since it relies on the body's natural healing mechanism and uses acoustic sound waves to improve metabolism and blood circulation in a specified area, there is no requirement for medicines or surgery.
